About
Melanie Baker is a rising slacker rock newcomer based in the North East of England. Her direct and honest lyricism captures themes such as queer identity, self-reflection and the anxieties of modern life. Her songs take you on an emotional and confusing rollercoaster with her unapologetic and sometimes uncomfortably honest lyrics paired with a sonically alluring, irreverent, grungy grit.
Baker’s debut EP ‘burnout baby’ was released via Du Blonde’s cult indie label Daemon T.V. The record picked up plaudits from Dork, Atwood, La Blogotheque, Songs Behind The Music, Rough Trade – ‘Counter Culture’, Hanging At The Back, Backseat Mafia, Cusica, Alternative Tracks, Postcards From The Underground, Indie Midlands, Retrantando Voces, New Age Magazine, Cool Music and Things, and more.
Elsewhere the EP picked up significant support from BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Introducing across the North East, Cumbria and nationally. Melanie was even invited for a live-on-air interview with Steve Lamacq on his drive-time afternoon show. This was then followed by a performance on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends and a sync on the long-running BBC TV series Waterloo Road.
Live highlights to date have included the main stage at Kendcal Calling, headlining the NARC. Magazine stage at Stockton Calling and performing live for BBC Introducing from The Glasshouse in Sage 2, not to mention supporting the likes of Maximo Park, Du Blonde and Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs across the UK.
